The Cross, Babes, and Broken Ones

The Orthodox sing about power and victory and the invincibility of God, while they stand before, and meditate upon, and even kiss the icon of God hung dead on a tree. This is because we understand that the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, the God of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, is a God whose saving power moves about this world through vessels which are small and broken. We commune our babes and our broken because they are what we are, and what we should be, if we would be that which God uses to save this world.

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Come, all people!
Let us fall down in worship before the blessed Tree,
for by the Cross, eternal justice has come to pass.
The devil deceived Adam by the Tree;
now he has been deceived by the Cross.
He held the royal creation in bondage;
now he has been cast down with an amazing fall.
The serpent's venom is washed by the blood of God.
The curse is destroyed by the righteous sentence of the just One Who was
unjustly condemned.
The Tree has been healed by the Tree!
The Passion of the passionless God has destroyed the passions of the
ry to Your dispensation, O Christ
our gracious King and the Lover of mankind!
